Stainless Steel Scrubbers: Grades & Care

Steel scrubbers do the heavy lifting in the kitchen. A little knowledge helps you sell — and use — them better.

Stainless Steel Scrubbers: Grades & Care

When grease and burnt residue won't budge, a stainless steel scrubber is the answer. But not all steel is equal, and a few simple habits dramatically extend its life.

Gram weight = size and life

Steel scrubbers are sold by weight — Pole Star offers 15, 20, 25 and 30 GM. The heavier the ball, the more steel it contains, so it lasts longer and handles bigger jobs. For retail, the 20 GM is the popular middle choice, while heavier 25–30 GM suits commercial kitchens.

Grade matters

Bulk steel is graded — Grade 430 stainless resists rust well, while galvanised iron (GI) "Super" grade is a value option. For loose supply, both are available by the kilo.

Where to use it — and where not to

  • Great for: burnt pots, tawas, grills, stainless utensils and stovetops.
  • Avoid on: non-stick coatings, glassware, polished or painted surfaces — steel will scratch them.

Make a scrubber last

The enemy of steel is rust. After use, rinse the scrubber thoroughly, squeeze out the water and let it dry in the open rather than leaving it sitting in a wet sink. Stored damp, even good steel will discolour over time. Treated well, a single 20 GM ball easily lasts weeks of daily use.
